Blood donation allowed during lockdown

In view of the urgent need to continue blood donations, those wishing to donate will be permitted to visit the Central Blood Bank in Bausher during the movement ban, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

‘To facilitate blood donors, coordination has been made between the MoH and the competent authorities to allow donors to go to blood banks during the movement ban. Donors will be granted temporary permits,’ an MoH statement said.

The procedure to obtain a permit to donate blood at the blood bank in Bausher will involvedonors booking an appointment two days before the due date by sending the word 'permit' via WhatsApp on 94555648.

After the appointment is confirmed, a copy of the permit will be sent via WhatsApp. ‘The donor will receive another permit from the blood bank after the donation,’ the statement said.

Those interested can donate blood from Saturday to Thursday from 8am to 8 pm, and on Friday from 3pm to 8pm, at the Central Blood Bank. It will be closed on the first day of Eid al Adha.

Blood banks in Oman need about 5,000 units of blood per month, while the Central Blood Bank in Bausher needs 100-120 donors a day to meet the requirements of health institutions.
