More vaccines from Covax expected soon

May 2, 2021

While Oman reported fewer cases towards the end of last week, there were still 833 inpatients, including 274 in ICUs across hospitals in the country.

The sultanate has now reported two thousand deaths 2,010 since the first death of the pandemic was reported in early April last year.

On Thursday, the total recovery rate also recorded improvement as it went up from around 89.3 to 90 per cent in a matter of two days.

Most of the cases in the country are reported from Bausher, Seeb, Muttrah in the capital and Salalah in Dhofar. Deaths are also from these regions.

Meanwhile, the Covax facility is coordinating additional shipments to 13 countries in the region, and more countries are expected to receive new shipments in the coming weeks and months, the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region has said.

A total of 62,691 people have the second dose of vaccines in Oman to date.

“Covid-19 vaccines are safe and effective to end this pandemic. Under the regional vision of health for all by all, we want as many people as possible to have access to lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines,” said Dr Ahmed al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.

“With commitment and solidarity, we can hope to end the acute phase of the pandemic by the end of 2021,” he stressed. “With so many people in the region affected by other emergencies, we need to make sure that all persons eligible to the vaccine receive it, regardless of their geographical location or political affiliation.”

He added, “We need to continue with those most at risk of severe diseases, like the elderly. Ultimately, no one will be safe until everyone is safe,” Dr al Mandhari said.

As of April 28, the region has reported over nine million confirmed Covid-19 cases and almost 180,906 deaths (case-fatality rate of two per cent) since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of new cases and deaths increased steadily as variants continue to be detected and communities do not adhere to public health and social measures.

The COVAX Facility aims to have 2 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines available for distribution worldwide by the end of 2021.
