602% jump in visitors to Oman

The number of visitors to Oman jumped an astounding 602 per cent with 794,000 arrivals registered till May 2022, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). In the first five months of 2021, Oman had recorded 113,000 visitors. In the 12 months of 2021, 652,000 people visited the sultanate, which is 22 per cent less than the figure this year till May.

A comparison of figures of May 2021 and May 2022 shows an exponential growth of visitors – 35 times or 3,484 per cent. In May 2021, 6,036 visitors came to Oman, and 216,348 in 2022.

The total number of outbound travellers also grew substantially – 218 per cent – from 472,000 in the first five months of 2021 to 1.5mn till May 2022.

According to the latest NCSI figures, GCC citizens were among the top nationalities that visited the sultanate till May, followed by Indian, Yemeni, Pakistani and German citizens.

While 349,986 people from the GCC visited Oman till May, there were 111,883 Indian, 28,495 Yemeni, 23,603 Pakistani and 23,289 German visitors.

Meanwhile, total revenues of three- to five-star hotels rose 129 per cent, amounting to RO73.058mn till May 2022, according to NCSI’s monthly data.

The number of hotel guests increased 46.2 per cent to 654,807, and occupancy rate increased by 23.3 per cent to 44.1 per cent till May 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

Among nationalities, European guests recorded the biggest growth – 809.4 per cent – to 176,591 as against 19,419 in five months of 2021. Omani guests dropped by 9.2 per cent to 280,306 compared to 308,818 last year.

GCC visitors also grew substantially – 778.5 per cent – to 50,803 in May 2022 compared to 5,783 in the same period in 2021. American visitor numbers increased by 200.2 per cent to 23,747, while visitors from Africa grew 96.5 per cent to 3,301.
